Productive Master: How to be Productive at the Highest Level


I can’t be the only one who has this question on a daily basis – “What can I do to increase how productive I am today?”. My goal today is to write 1000 words, but I also have two tiny minions demanding my attention, so therein lies my predicament. Attempting to focus my attention on my novel, my children, and my house is quite the battle I tells ya. Luckily for me, I happen to be an excellent organizer and multi-tasker, so I will achieve everything that I need to do, sometimes it’s just a matter of getting a little creative- like asking my kids to describe something, such a fascinating technique to look at new ways of writing about people, places, and things. My productive level fluctuates, as everyone’s does, but there are ways that we can try to maximize our production.

What strategies do you use in order to stay on track when you have so many things on your to do list? Personally I’m a list maker, I make lists on my phone, on my white board and on the stickies on my Mac. I find it so much easier to focus my attention to the task at hand when everything else I need to do has been written down- no need to remember it. Another thing I like to do is start with the tasks that are either smallest, or easiest. That way I am able to cross things off my list a lot sooner, which is so very satisfying.

Top Five Productive Tools:

  1. Invest in a whiteboard – It makes To-Do lists and grocery lists quick as easy to make, and if you keep it in the kitchen – it’s always in your face.
  2. Siri – or any similar app. You can easily ask Siri to make notes for you, book appointments, and set alarms you can’t afford to miss.
  3. Break up your day – spending hours upon hours writing, or cleaning your house will amount to less productivity than if you were to do things in smaller batches.
  4. Have ‘Me Time’ – Take some time our of your day to do something you want to do. Sit down and watch a show, read a book, or take a bath. Nothing boosts productivity like taking a breather.
  5. Remove distractions – If you can’t focus with a TV on, then turn it off. If you can’t write on your laptop without checking facebook every five minutes, invest in a note-pad.

All this goal talk reminds me I need to get back to my own To-Do list, so far my novel is sitting just shy of 4000 words, and I am nearly done the first draft of my very first chapter. Its rubbish – legit – but it feels good to get the story out, to just get it written and worry about fine tuning it later. I’m not looking forward to that part, I anticipate several rewrites. Ha! I think it’s important that you should feel proud of yourself when ever you accomplish something you set out to do, even the little tasks that may seem insignificant. Some days it’s really hard to get out of bed, so if you managed to sneak in a shower and ate some real food today- give yourself a pat on the back man, you deserve it.
